When you write a news update you need to know your topic well. It’s similar to writing a research paper; you need to do your research on the topic and then write a list of all the important facts about the subject matter. This list of facts will help you to keep from leaving out any pertinent information, and also will assist you in focusing on the most important aspects of your story. News articles are usually written in the inverted pyramid format where the most important news is at the beginning of the article and the least newsworthy information at the end. Make sure to put your follow-ups into this format as well.
Always have an extra pair of eyes look over your article before submitting it for publication. This way an extra set of eyes can double check the information you are using and also that you have followed through with your inverted pyramid structure. Remember that a news article should be informative and give readers enough information to form their own opinion, even if it is different than yours.
